WONDERS OF ICELAND – AURORA BOREALIS
The word aurora is derived from the name of the Roman goddess of the dawn, Aurora, who announced the sun’s arrival every morning. The word borealis comes from the name of the ancient purple-winged god of the north wind, Boreas. He was also the god of winter who chilled the air with his icy breath.
Aurora borealis, or northern lights, appear when solar particles collide with atoms and molecules in the Earth’s atmosphere, usually at an altitude of about 100km, causing them to glow. They are most often variations of green but can also be pink, red, or purple. When the lights are very faint we see them as gray or white.
The northern lights only appear in the Northern hemisphere and at approximately 64 degrees north, Iceland is the perfect place to see the lights.
